Sermon Overview
Continuing the series Psalms That Shape Us: Encountering God Shapes Ordinary Life, this sermon shows how Psalm 139 trains our hearts to live fully known and fully open before God instead of hiding in fear or self-protection.
The big idea is that to be fully loved is to be at home with God, where we are safe to be fully known, fully open, and led in the way everlasting, so that “Search me, O God” rises out of worship rather than dread.
Gospel Hope
The sermon anchors Psalm 139 in the gospel by showing that everything required for us to be and remain in relationship with God has been accomplished in Jesus, so the searching presence of God pulls us into grace rather than panic.

Jesus bears our shame:
He took our guilt and sin to the cross, was stripped and exposed in our place, and rose again so that those who are in Him no longer need to hide.

Jesus makes us alive:
Where sin left us spiritually dead and at war with God, He brings us alive by His Spirit so we can live at home in God’s presence.

Jesus dwells within us:
The risen Christ, by the Spirit, now searches and shapes our hearts from within, forming His life in us and making “search me” a prayer of trust, not terror.
Response
The sermon presses into ordinary life by inviting each listener to take one honest step of openness: bringing one hidden thing into the light, telling one trusted brother or sister where the heart has closed off, or taking one unhurried moment to sit before God without performing.
Because we are already fully known and fully loved in Christ, Psalm 139 becomes a grace-filled prayer: “Lord, shape my heart to be fully open. Search me, know me, try my thoughts, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
