Ecclesiastes 5:1–7 • Day 2

Fewer Words, More Awe

Ecclesiastes 5:1b–2

Read

Ecclesiastes 5:1–7

“Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words. When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands? For when dreams increase and words grow many, there is vanity; but God is the one you must fear.”

New Testament Truth — James 1:19

“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”

Pause

God, I pause again in Your presence. I let the noise around me fade into the background. Help me to be still before You, to quiet my tongue and my racing thoughts.

Rejoice / Reflect

“To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools… God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.” Ecclesiastes 5:1–2. You value my words, but You are not impressed by my many words. You invite me first to listen. In a world that rewards constant talking, reacting, and posting, You call me into a different posture—silence, attentiveness, and awe. Jesus is my hope here too. He does not merely tell me to be still; He gives me peace with God through His finished work. Because of Him, I do not have to perform to be accepted. In the hevel, when life is loud and my soul is restless, Jesus meets me with grace and teaches me to rest before the Father.

Ask

Lord, help me become a person who draws near to listen. Show me where my prayers have become more about performance or persuasion than about relationship. Teach me to love Your voice more than my own. Give me the courage to allow silence in my time with You, trusting that You are working even when I am not speaking.

Yield

I yield my need to fill every moment with my words. I lay down the impulse to sprint into Your presence with a full agenda. Today, before I tell You what I want, I choose to sit quietly and say: “Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.” Jesus, calm the noise within me. In the hevel, let Your grace quiet my striving and teach me to listen as one who is already loved.

Scripture Promise

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Sit in Silence

What noise, fear, or inner pressure is Jesus inviting you to hand over so you can receive His rest in silence?
